“There were her compositions and exercise-books; some samplers and queer little keepsakes, withered flowers ... and other things of like value, with which there was probably some pleasant association.”

Inspired by Sarah Orne Jewett’s novel, Deephaven (1877), in which Kate & Helen explore the late Grand Aunt Katharine’s desk drawers and are taken with a small bundle of letters tied with black ribbon and marked in Aunt Katharine’s pen, “My dearest friend, Dolly McAllister, died September 3, 1809, aged eighteen.”  Perhaps these miniature marking samplers were those they found in the drawer?  One stitched by Katharine and one by Dolly when they were yet girls, happily spending the summer together at Deephaven…

Stitched on 35 count linen using a combination of DMC and Gentle Arts threads.  Both are very simply backed with calico.

Stitch counts: 75w x 68h (top) and 74w x 61h (bottom)

Finished sizes: 5”w x 4.5”h and 5”w x 4”h

Pattern includes color photo, professional cross stitch charts with floss colors for The Gentle Art and DMC, aging instructions, and directions for backing your samplers.
