Marie Journet 1863

Marie’s sampler has a joyful, naïve quality with birds, potted plants, and an abundance of hearts scattered across the bottom. Wonderfully curious is the way, just above the birds, she worked her last name and most of its letters backwards!

Worked in the mid-section of the sampler are the words,“Fait par Marie J Journet agée de 5 ans le 6 Juin Vienne Departement de l’ Isere 1863” which translates to “Made by Marie Journet aged 5 years on June 6, Vienne, Department of Isere, 1863.”  Vienne is a commune (township or city) in Isere, which is located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southeastern France.

The reproduction is stitched on Lakeside Linen Vintage Light Examplar.  All stitches are cross stitch.
