How like the fleeting wind away
Whole years of joy depart.
But oh how slowly does one day,
Move to the mournful heart.
~~Nathaniel Low’s Almanack, 1778
Back in the day it was not uncommon for a young girl to stitch a mourning sampler for a family member ~ often, sadly, a young sibling. I had this memorial sampler rattling around in my head for several years, but it is not for a person ~ rather for the loss of our beloved golden retriever, Winston Maxwell Hunter, in 2007. Stitched in muted colors, it features an alphabet, horizontal bands, poignant verse, and most notably an old dog motif atop a monument bearing the inscription, “In Loving Memory of WMH”.
The sampler is stitched on linen over both one and two threads. The uppermost horizontal band, verse, dates, and monument text are over one. A combination of DMC and Gentle Arts threads were used. Pattern includes a complete alphabet and number set so you can enter customized dates and your pet’s name or initials on the monument. Cat lovers, don't despair! The pattern also includes a cat motif! A sweet way to memorialize a beloved companion…
Stitch count: 120h x 84w.
Pattern includes color photo, professional cross stitch chart with floss colors for The Gentle Art and DMC, and optional aging instructions. Done entirely in cross stitch.
