I have confessed before that some of the characters I create, Fancey Blackett in particular, seem to move through life with me. What I mean is, when I am gardening, I imagine Fancey in her little garden plot checking the growth of the pumpkins and filling her apron with ripe tomatoes. When I am sitting on the porch with a glass of lemonade I imagine Fancey sitting in her own rocking chair with a bottle of her home brewed tea. I like having Fancey as a companion and these muses inspire my work.
So when I saw a most charming fraktur drawing attributed to John Van Minian of a buxom lady standing between two tall tulips, I fancied I saw not the buxom lady but a not so buxom Fancey Blackett standing between two tall sunflowers. The result of this muse you see here. Punched in the rich shades you will find in my garden, the finished piece would look equally well made into a hanging pocket or stitched to a wool pillow. A larger piece, it measures 8”h x 4.25”w.
