Mary Ann Suckling filled her sampler with wonderfully naïve and folky motifs, like the large basket of flowers flourishing in the center and the heart enclosing the year it was wrought. Equally charming is her use of color in rendering the birds (one red, one green) and fir trees (green and pink). The reproduction corrects for age-related thread loss (which was abundant) but otherwise faithfully replicates Mary’s stitches.
The reproduction was stitched on Week’s Dye Works 30 count Straw linen using cross and four-sided stitch. Majority of sampler is worked over two threads, except for some of the letters in the verse, which are worked over one. Week’s Dye Works threads used throughout. Pattern includes color photo, professional cross stitch chart, DMC alternates, and general instructions (including instructions for executing four-sided stitches). Stitch count: 170w x 180h ~ 11.5”w x 11.75”h.
